Hyperlipidemia(lipid disorder) is the medical term for high blood cholesterol and triglycerides. This disorder occurs when you have too many fatty substances
in your blood that contain cholesterol and triglycerides. Hyperlipidemia can increase your risk for atherosclerosis, heart disease, pancreatitis, stroke and high blood pressure. There are also many genetic disorders passed down in families linked to abnormal levels of cholesterol and triglycerides.
The most common types of cholesterol are:
- Total cholesterol
- HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol)
- LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol)
Abnormal cholesterol and triglyceride levels can be caused by other factors such as heart disease, obesity, medication, diabetes, hypothyroidism, Cushing Syndrome, polycystic ovary syndrome, kidney disease, excessive alcohol use, fatty diets, lack of exercise and smoking.
Most people can improve their cholesterol levels by a healthy diet, exercise regularly, maintain a healthy weight, and avoid smoking and excessive alcohol.
If then your cholesterol levels don’t change, your physician may put you medication.
